Moonlight’s Ashton Sanders and Jharrel Jerome won the MTV Movie & TV Award for ‘Best Kiss’ last night… and made history at the same time!
This is the first time that two black men have won the award for “best kiss”, which was previously won by the stars of The Notebook, Twilight, and of course, Titanic.
It’s also the first time in 20 years that two black actors have walked away with the award – the previous winners were Will Smith and Vivica A. Fox for Independence Day way back in 1997.
“I think it is safe to say, that it is okay for us young performers, especially us minority performers to step out of the box,” Jharrel Jerome said during his acceptance speech.
“I think it is okay to step out of the box and do whatever it takes to tell the story and do whatever it takes to make a change. And, so, this award is, it is for that.
“It is for us artists who are out there who need to step out of the box to do whatever it takes to get people to wake up.”
Ashton Sanders rounded off nicely with a very powerful message about the bigger picture…’
“This award is bigger than Jharrel and I,” he added.
“This represents more than a kiss. This is for those who feel like the others, the misfits, this representatives us, so, we love y’all and thank y’all.”
Well said, guys!
Words cannot express how happy we are to see these actors win the prize.
