Angelina Jolie has just broken Jennifer Aniston’s Instagram record, by becoming the fastest user to reach one million followers.

Jennifer Aniston broke the record when she gained one million followers in just five hours and 16 minutes after joining the social media platform in October 2019.

Jennifer Aniston wasn’t the current record holder though, as Taeil Moon from South Korean boy group NCT gained a million followers in just one hour and 45 minutes when he joined Instagram a month ago, breaking Harry Potter star Rupert Grint’s previous record, as he amassed one million followers in just four hours and one minute back in November 2020.

According to reports, Angelina Jolie gained over 1.7 million followers in just one hour when she joined Instagram on Friday. She then reached 5 million followers within 24 hours and is currently (at the time of writing) at 9.6 million.

The 46-year-old Oscar-winning actress and humanitarian currently only follows three other accounts, (NAACP, Doctors Without Borders, and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency) and told her followers that she joined the platform to share the “stories and the voices” of people around the world who are fighting for their basic human rights.

Her first post on the platform was an emotional one, as she shared a picture of a handwritten letter she received from an Afghan girl after the Taliban takeover…

“This is a letter I was sent from a teenage girl in Afghanistan,” her post began.

“Right now, the people of Afghanistan are losing their ability to communicate on social media and to express themselves freely.

“So I’ve come on Instagram to share their stories and the voices of those across the globe who are fighting for their basic human rights.”

She then went into further detail about her own experiences with Afghan refugees, and pledged to “find ways to help” in any way she can…

“I was on the border of Afghanistan two weeks before 9/11, where I met Afghan refugees who had fled the Taliban. This was twenty years ago,” the post continued.

“It is sickening to watch Afghans being displaced yet again out of the fear and uncertainty that has gripped their country.

“To spend so much time and money, to have blood shed and lives lost only to come to this, is a failure almost impossible to understand.

“Watching for decades how Afghan refugees – some of the most capable people in the world – are treated like a burden is also sickening. Knowing that if they had the tools and respect, how much they would do for themselves. And meeting so many women and girls who not only wanted an education, but fought for it.

“Like others who are committed, I will not turn away. I will continue to look for ways to help. And I hope you’ll join me.”

We can’t wait to see what else Angelina Jolie shares over the next few months…
