It’s the end of an era, as The Ellen DeGeneres Show will officially be coming to an end after 19 seasons!

The 63-year-old comedian made the announcement on yesterday’s episode of her daytime talk show, telling viewers that season 19 – which will wrap next year – will be the final one.

The news comes just under a year after the show was plagued with a toxic work environment and racism allegations, and viewing figures really began to plummet.

At the time, show producers said they had no intention of canceling the show – although three of the show’s top produces reportedly said they would be leaving – despite all the controversy surrounding it.

In September last year, Ellen admitted to all of her mistakes, and vowed that she was “looking at herself to make changes” for the better…

“I learned that things happened here that never should have happened,” she said in September last year.

“I take that very seriously, and I want to say I am so sorry to the people who were affected.”

So did Ellen DeGeneres make the decision to cancel her show herself? Was she quietly pushed to end it due to the controversy and the plummeting viewing figures, or was the decision completely out of her hands?

No one actually knows for sure, but Ellen hinted that the reason was that the show was no longer fun and challenging for her…

“When you’re a creative person, you constantly need to be challenged — and as great as this show is, and as fun, as it is, it’s just not a challenge anymore,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.

An insider from the show reportedly told The Daily Mail that the controversy and poor audience figures definitely had a huge part to play, revealing that Ellen “has had enough and told her team that she’s done.”

“She’s promised one more season after this one and will exit at the end of the 2021/2022 season – the 19th season of the show,” the source continued.

“The ratings have tanked and have been truly appalling this year and Ellen knows her time is up.”

Ellen will reportedly be sitting down with Oprah Winfrey later today (Thursday, May 13) to go into everything in more detail. Hopefully, we will have the answers to all of our questions!

The Ellen DeGeneres Show launched in 2003 and will be coming to an end in 2022.

Are you surprised to hear that The Ellen DeGeneres Show is ending? Or do you think it should have ended last year when the toxic work environment allegations started?
