Halle Berry has just revealed that she is completely “heartbroken” that no other Black woman has won the Best Actress Oscar!

And it doesn’t look like that will change this year either, as the 2022 Oscar nominations have just been announced; and no Black actress is up for the major gong…

This year’s ‘Best Actress in a Leading Role’ nominations are Jessica Chastain (The Eyes of Tammy Faye), Olivia Colman (The Lost Daughter), Penélope Cruz (Parallel Mothers), Nicole Kidman (Being the Ricardos), and Kristen Stewart (Spencer).

Halle Berry made history in 2002 when she became the first Black woman to win the ‘Best Actress’ Oscar for her role in Monster’s Ball, but said that she was shocked and heartbroken that no other Black actress had won it since…

“I do feel completely heartbroken that there’s no other woman standing next to me in 20 years,” the 55-year-old Moonfall said in an interview for ABC.

“I thought, like everybody else, that night meant a lot of things would change. That there would be other women.

“I thought I would have the script truck back up to my front door and I’d have an opportunity to play any role I wanted. That didn’t happen. No other woman is standing there.”

She then went on to say that, despite no other Black actress joining her in the Best Actress hall of fame, her history-making win in 2002 “inspired” so many people of color to pursue their dreams and tell their stories…

“But what I do know happened that night is that so many people of color got inspired,” she continued.

“When I look around and I see my brothers and sisters working and thriving and telling their own stories from their point of view. I’m proud of that, and I see the movement forward. And I think that night inspired so many of those people to dream those dreams.”

Halle Berry also went on to share her disappointment that neither Viola Davis nor Andra Day, who played the leading roles in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and The United States vs. Billie Holiday respectively, took home the ‘Best Actress’ award last year, which instead went to Frances McDormand for her role in Nomadland…

“I think we have to start to change our perspective because it’s clear that we may not change how the awards are handed out,” the Bruised actress and director added.

“But in lieu of changing that, what can we change? We can change our participation within the industry. We can change how hard we fight to tell our stories, the scripts we write.”

This isn’t the first time she opened up about her disappointment in the industry, either…

“When you have a historic win like that, you think, ‘Oh, this is going to fundamentally change,'” she reflected in an interview with Entertainment Weekly back in August.

“It did fundamentally change me, but it didn’t change my place in the business overnight. I still had to go back to work. I still had to try to fight to make a way out of no way.”

Perhaps 2023 will be the year that sees a Black actress join Halle Berry…
