Kit Harington has opened up about his past struggles with depression and addiction, in the hope that his story might help someone in a similar boat.

In a very candid interview with Sunday Times Magazine, the 34-year-old former Game of Thrones star explained that he had a lot of personal issues to overcome before finally being  the “very, very happy, content, sober man” he is today.

In the interview, the actor – who married fellow Game of Thrones star Rose Leslie in 2018, and welcomed a baby boy with her last year – opened up about his struggles, which even included suicidal thoughts during his darkest moments…

“Things that have happened to me since Thrones ended, and that were happening during Thrones, were of a pretty traumatic nature and they did include alcohol,” he confessed.

“I went through periods of real depression where I wanted to do all sorts of things.”

Kit Harington, who played Jon Snow in the iconic award-winning show, reportedly checked into a rehab facility in Connecticut back in 2019, and apart from the use of tobacco, has been sober ever since…

“You get to a place where you feel like you are a bad person, you feel like you are a shameful person. And you feel that there’s no way out, that’s just who you are. And getting sober is the process of going, ‘No, I can change,'” he continued.

“One of my favorite things I learnt recently is that the expression ‘a leopard doesn’t change its spots’ is completely false: that a leopard actually does change its spots. I just think that’s the most beautiful thing. It really helped.

“That was something I kind of clung to; the idea that I could make this huge fundamental change in who I was and how I went about my life.”

And speaking of his life, the actor explained that he is happier than ever as a husband and father, despite admitting that the first few months of parenting were harder than any of the grueling scenes he had filmed on Game of Thrones…

“My hat goes off to any single parent. Any single parent, you’re a f—ing genius. I don’t know how you do it. Because it’s more exhausting than everything I did on Thrones,” he admitted, before reminding himself and everyone else that he couldn’t be happier with his life right now…

“I have a child and my relationship is brilliant … I’m a very, very happy, content, sober man,” he concluded.

We’re happy that Kit Harington has been comfortable enough to speak up about his struggles – and even happier that he has overcome them!
