John Singleton has passed away at the age of 51 after suffering a major stroke.

The Oscar-nominated director had been in a coma after suffering a major stroke since April 17 and was taken off life support yesterday (April 29).

“It is with heavy hearts we announce that our beloved son, father and friend, John Daniel Singleton will be taken off of life support today,” a statement from his family read.

“This was an agonizing decision, one that our family made, over a number of days, with the careful counsel of John’s doctors.”

The family issued another statement to confirm the news of his passing…

“We are sad to relay that John Singleton has died,” a spokesperson for his family told E! News in a statement.

“John passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family and friends.

“We want to thank the amazing doctors at Cedars-Sinai Hospital for their expert care and kindness and we again want thank all of John’s fans, friends and colleagues for all of the love and support they showed him during this difficult time.”

John Singleton – who received an Oscar nomination for Boyz n the Hood – was a beloved director who was adored and respected by all of Hollywood. Some of the world’s biggest actors and directors – from Halle Berry to Regina King to Jordan Peele – took to social media to mourn him and pay their respects to his family…

“#JohnSingleton was an innovator – he came with drive & a creative vision when people of color didn’t have the same visibility we do now,” Halle Berry wrote on Twitter.

“He will remain a beacon of light in our community, and today we celebrate his legacy. Rest well my friend, we’ve lost one of the good guys.”

“Rest In Power, my friend. One of the greatest to ever do it,” Regina King wrote on Instagram, alongside several pictures of them together.

“Thank you GOD for blessing us with this gift better known as John Singleton. Having trouble finding enough words to share just what you mean to me. Will always love you John! Your spirit will forever shine bright.”

“RIP John Singleton. So sad to hear. John was a brave artist and a true inspiration. His vision changed everything,” Jordan Peele wrote on Twitter.
