This year’s Oscars didn’t let a little thing like not having a host get in its way…

The 91st Annual Academy Awards took place at the Dolby Theatre last night, and we didn’t even notice that it didn’t have a main host with Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Maya Rudolph opening the show in the most hilarious and on point way imaginable. (We might start a petition to have them as official hosts for next year – who’s with us?)

As always, some awards predictions came true (Rami Malek winning ‘Best Actor’ for Bohemian Rhapsody), while other categories had surprising and unexpected winners (Olivia Colman winning ‘Best Actress’ for The Favourite instead of Glenn Close for her role in The Wife.)

And if you share the same opinion as Spike Lee, ‘undeserving winners’ too. (Long story short, the director was less than happy that Green Book won the biggest accolade of the night, i.e. ‘Best Picture’. And he wasn’t afraid to show it, as he walked out as soon as the announcement was made.)

We were delighted when Regina King (who looked absolutely sensational, may we add, in her white Oscar de la Renta gown) won the ‘Best Supporting Actress’ award for her stunning performance in If Beale Street Could Talk.

“To be standing here representing one of the greatest artists of our time, James Baldwin, is a little surreal,” Regina King said during her acceptance speech.

“James Baldwin burst this baby, Barry you nurtured her and surrounded her with so much love and support so it’s appropriate for me to be standing here because I’m an example of what it looks like when support and love is poured into someone.

“Mom, I love you so much, thank you for teaching me that God always has been leaning in my direction. God is good, all the time.”

But perhaps even better – purely for the fact that he has made history – was the fact that Mahershala Ali was once again crowned ‘Best Supporting Actor’, having previously won the award back in 2017 for his role in the Oscar-winning movie, Moonlight. What a moment!

And speaking of making history, Black Panther did just that. Before yesterday, only one African-American woman had won an Oscar in a non-acting category in the show’s entire 91 year history, but Black Panther’s ‘Best Costume Design’ and ‘Best Production Design’ victories changed all that.

“Marvel may have created the first black superhero, but through costume design, we turned him into an African king,” Ruth Carter said while accepting her ‘Best Costume Design’ award.

“I give the strength to all of those who come next, to keep going, to never give up,” Hannah Beachler added, when she accepted her award for ‘Best Production Design’.

Another big highlight of the awards ceremony was Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s intimate performance of Shallow from A Star is Born, rendering the whole theatre silent and awe-stricken. And of course, Lady Gaga winning the award for ‘Best Original Song’ and delivering quite the emotional acceptance speech…

“It is not about winning, but it’s about not giving up. If you have a dream, fight for it,” she said, while clutching her golden statue.

“There’s a discipline for passion, and it’s not about how many times you get rejected or you fall down or beaten up, it’s about how many times you stand up and are brave.”
