Selena Gomez has once again opened up about her health, this time getting candid about what it was like being diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

The 29-year-old singer and actress previously revealed that she had been diagnosed with Lupus back in 2014, and underwent a kidney transplant in 2017.

Selena Gomez first went public with her bipolar disorder diagnosis back in April 2020 during Miley Cyrus’s Bright Minded Instagram Live…

“Recently I went to one of the best mental hospitals in America, McLean Hospital, and I discussed that, after years of going through a lot of different things, I realized that I was bipolar,” she told Miley Cyrus at the time.

“And so when I go to know more information, it actually helps me. It doesn’t scare me once I know it … I wanted to know everything about it, and it took the fear away.”

Receiving a diagnosis like bipolar disorder can come with many mixed emotions, but for Selena Gomez, it was a huge weight lifted off…

“I felt a huge weight lifted off me when I found out,” the Wolves singer told Elle’s September issue.

“I could take a deep breath and go, ‘Okay, that explains so much.’

“There were all things that honestly should have taken me down. Every time I went through something, I was like, ‘What else? What else am I going to have to deal with?’”

Selena told the magazine that staying off social media (understandably) really helped her mental health, as not associating herself with negativity played a huge role in helping her anxiety

“This tiny little phone that had 150 million people on it — I just put it down. That was such a relief for me,” she added, before revealing that she gave her social media passwords to her assistant back in 2017, and hasn’t looked back since…

“I don’t have it on my phone, so there’s no temptation. I suddenly had to learn how to be with myself.”

Selena Gomez also mentioned that knowing that she can help others by going public with her mental health issues and trying to stay strong for her fans and anyone else in the same boat has really helped her. And as a result, she is a supporter of many mental health causes and organizations.

She also revealed that moving forward, she will try to only work on projects that have a “charity aspect” to them as well…

“If something good isn’t coming out of it, I’m not going to do it. I don’t need money,” she added.

Her very successful HBO Max cooking show, Selena + Chef, has already raised $360,000 for 23 non-profit organizations.

She also recently launched the Rare Impact Fund alongside her Rare Beauty cosmetics line, in a bid to attempt to raise $100 million over the next ten years to help those suffering with mental health issues.
