Demi Lovato has just announced that they are no longer “California sober” as “sober sober is the only way to be”.

“I no longer support my ‘California sober’ ways,” they wrote on their Instagram Story on December 2.

“Sober sober is the only way to be,” they added.

Demi’s announcement came just one day after they commemorated their late friend Thomas Trussell III, who died of a drug overdose in 2019.

“You’re unforgettable,” Demi wrote about Trussell. “We miss and love you. I mean how gorgeous is @sirtruss.”

Demi – who announced that they were now non-binary and had gender-neutral pronouns such as “they” and “them” in May this year – said they were “California sober” in the last part of the four-part YouTube docuseries entitled Dancing with the Devil, which aired earlier this year.

The 29-year-old singer said they were no longer entirely sober, as that would, in their words, be unattainable and set them up for failure, and they had begun smoking marijuana and “drinking in moderation”. I.e., California sober…

“Telling myself I can never have a drink or smoke marijuana, I feel like that’s setting myself up for failure because I am such a black and white thinker,” Demi said in the documentary.

“I had it drilled into my head for so many years that one drink was equivalent to a crack pipe.

“I don’t want people to hear that and think that they can go out and try just having a drink or smoking a joint because it isn’t for everybody.

“Recovery isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution and you shouldn’t be forced to get sober if you’re not ready. You shouldn’t get sober for other people, you have to do it for yourself.”

We wonder what caused Demi to make the decision to go “sober sober”…

Either way, we wholeheartedly support them and wish them the best of luck on their new sober sober journey!
