Devastating news this morning, as it’s just been confirmed that Michael K Williams has died from a suspected drug overdose.

The 54-year-old star of HBO’s The Wire was reportedly found dead of a suspected heroin overdose in his New York penthouse apartment on Monday. He was pronounced dead by authorities at 2:12 p.m, although it was unclear how long he had been dead before he was found.

A source said that a relative of the actor spoke to him on Friday, while another revealed that he was supposed to turn up to an event on Saturday but didn’t make it.

The five-time-Emmy-nominated actor’s rep released a statement confirming his death, while also asking for privacy during this heart-breaking time.

“It is with deep sorrow that the family announces the passing of Emmy nominated actor Michael Kenneth Williams,’’ spokeswoman Marianna Shafran told The Hollywood Reporter.

“They ask for your privacy while grieving this unsurmountable loss.’’

Police have reportedly suspected “no foul play” with his death, which has unofficially been confirmed as a fatal overdose.

“No foul play indicated,’’ a police source said, according to The New York Post.

“No forced entry, the apartment was in order,” the source added, in reference to his Brooklyn penthouse apartment.

According to reports, the actor was discovered “face-down and unresponsive” in the dining room, with what is believed to be heroin on the table.

The actor, who plays the role of Baltimore stick-up man Omar Little on The Wire, has spoken openly about his drug addiction in the past. Back in 2016, he opened up about his struggles with addiction, and referenced a time when he desperately sought help from a church in New Jersey…

“When I came through those doors, I was broken. This was, I would say, around the third season of The Wire,” he told NPR at the time.

“I was on drugs. I was in jeopardy of destroying everything I had worked so hard for, and I came in those doors, and I met a man who had never even heard of The Wire, much less watched it,’’ he said, in reference to the pastor.

“I wrote my full name down — Michael Kenneth Williams — and in the office, the pastor turns around, and he says, ‘So what do you want to be called, man?’ I said, ‘Well, you know, my name is Michael, but I could do Mike.’ He says, ‘Why does everybody say, ‘Omar, Omar’s in trouble?’ And I was like, ‘Oh, this dude is clueless about the show.’”

Michael K Williams’ death will be felt by so many, including the entire HBO team who released their own statement following the news…

“We are devastated to learn of the passing of Michael Kenneth Williams, a member of the HBO family for more than 20 years,” read a statement from the network.

“While the world is aware of his immense talents as an artist, we knew Michael as a dear friend who was beloved by all who had the privilege to work with him. We send our deepest condolences to his family for this immeasurable loss.”

Our thoughts are with his loved ones during this devastating time.
