Serena Williams may be a pro on the tennis court, but the new mother has revealed that she is just like the rest of us as far as parenting is concerned.

The 36-year-old tennis champion welcomed her daughter Alexis Olympia into the world 11 months ago, and explained that her life has been full of ups and downs from the very beginning…

“Some days, I cry,” she said in an interview with TIME.

“I’m really sad. I’ve had meltdowns. It’s been a really tough 11 months.

“Sometimes she just wants Mommy, she doesn’t want anyone else.”

She then explained that it is a tough battle between being there for her daughter while also making time for herself, and we assume, her professional tennis life…

“I still have to learn a balance of being there for her and being there for me. I’m working on it,” she added.

“I never understood women before, when they put themselves in second or third place. And it’s so easy to do.

“I don’t think I’m doing it right.”

We applaud Serena Williams for being so open with her fans about her struggles.

We need more famous faces like Serena and Chrissy Teigen – who has also been very open with her postpartum difficulties – to let new mothers know they aren’t alone.
