The highly anticipated HBO Max Friends reunion that we waited 17 years for (not that we’re counting) finally aired on our screens last night – and boy, it did not disappoint!

There were so many highlights from the Friends reunion. From Lisa Kudrow and Lady Gaga singing Smelly Cat together to supermodels Cara Delevingne and Cindy Crawford strutting their stuff in some of the show’s most iconic costumes (Rachel’s pink bridesmaid dress from Barry and Mindy’s wedding, and Ross’s infamous leather pants respectively) it was impossible to choose a favorite moment.

However, perhaps one of the most shocking parts of the almost two-hour reunion show had to be a confession from David Schwimmer and Jenifer Aniston, who played on/off lovers Ross and Rachel.

What was the revelation, you ask? Oh, just that they almost became a real-life couple during the first season of Friends… and we never had a clue!

Both David Schwimmer and Jennifer Aniston told host James Corden that they had “major” crushes on each other during the first seasons, but the opportunity for them to take things further didn’t come up due to other relationships…

“Yeah, the first season we—I had a major crush on Jen,” David Schwimmer confessed.

“It was reciprocated,” Jennifer Aniston confirmed.

Our jaws had well and truly dropped when we heard this!

“At some point, we were both crushing hard on each other, but it was like two ships passing because one of us was always in a relationship, and we never crossed that boundary. We respected that,” David Schwimmer continued, we assume in reference to the fact that either one of them or both of them were in relationships.

“Honestly, I remember saying one time to David, ‘It’s going to be such a bummer if the first time you and I actually kiss is going to be on national television.’ And sure enough, the first time we kissed was in that coffee shop,” Jen added.

“So, we just channeled all of our adoration and love for each other into Ross and Rachel.”

Although we, the viewers, didn’t have a clue about their off-screen feelings for each other, the same can’t be said for the rest of the cast…

Matthew Perry said, “We knew,” while Courteney Cox also made it clear that the cast was aware that something was going on, adding, “We knew for sure.”

Who knows what life – and the show – would have been like if David and Jennifer actually got together…

If you still haven’t watched the Friends reunion, you can watch it on HBO Max right now.

Those two hours might just be two of the best hours of your year – trust us!
