Octavia Spencer has just revealed that, as a woman of color, she wasn’t earning as much as her white co-stars. That is until her good friend and co-star Jessica Chastain stepped in…

The Oscar-winning actress and former The Help co-star Jessica Chastain are currently working together on a new comedy project. However, it was during an interesting discussion with each other that they found out that their pay was less than equal…

“Here’s the thing – women of color on that spectrum, we make far less than white women,” Octavia explained on the Women Breaking Barriers panel.

“If we’re going to have that conversation about pay, we have to bring women of color to the table.

“And I told Jessica my story and we talked numbers and she was quiet and she had no idea that that’s what it was like for women of color.”

Octavia Spencer then went on to praise her co-star for taking matters into her own hands and doing everything she could to help her friend, and as a result, close the race pay gap. The ladies now hope to address the gender pay gap too!

“I love that woman because she’s walking the walk and actually talking the talk,” she added.

“She said, ‘Octavia, we’re going to get you paid on this film. She said, ‘we’re going to be tied together, we’re going to make the same thing and you’re going to make that amount’.

“And fast forward to last week, we’re making five times what we asked for. And now I want what the men are making, I want to get there. But right now it feels good to be in that conversation.”

One step at a time, but a step in the right direction. We need more people like Jessica Chastain around!
